Sex, Blogs and Videotape…

Welcome to ClanBase blogs. See inside which blogs are worth reading and an interview with a ClanBase blogger.
Greetings ClanBase fans, I am the new ClanBase blogs editor Daniel ‘VARDY’ Vardy.
Some of you may already know me from Unreal Tournament 2004 and others may know me from my previous blogs writtten here on ClanBase.

Welcome back to the weird and wonderful world of blogging. Each week I will bring you the latest and greatest blogs the ClanBase community can provide.

First I bring you a blog from Sluuge, who writes about how persistence eventually pays off with his blog entitled ‘To win, or not to win!’.
Here, Sluuge talks about how he has gone through three years of playing in ClanBase cups without winning a cup himself, and then eventually this past Spring cup season he got hold of two cup wins in Trackmania and Unreal Tournament 2004 TAM.
Sluuge shows here that if you try hard enough you will eventually get that win you have been hoping for. Congratulations.

In the next blog, TheDevilOnLine writes a response to Netrams blog about piracy in video games. Here however, TheDevilOnLine talks about piracy from a developers point of view and why it is hurting their business profits. There has been a lot of news circulating about piracy recently, it’s good to see that people understand the consequences of downloading games illegally.

Here, I bring you an interview from Netram who has come to my attention from his views upon piracy. I decided to catch up with him to get to know the person behind the profile.

Please introduce yourself, so our ClanBase readers can get to know about you.
My name is Martin ‘Netram’ Evans. I’m 18 and come from Manchester, UK. I used to work in retail and now I’m a full-time student studying ICT, Computing, Business Studies and General Studies.

How long have you been playing on ClanBase? Which games do you play?
I used to play vCoD for [EVO] and then after leaving with some friends in 2005 we set up Team Failure, we’re still playing scrims together today just not as competitive as we used to. We’ve tried a bunch of games from Warcraft 3 to Call of Duty 4 but we’re still trying to find ‘that’ game.

What made you choose ClanBase over other gaming leagues?
We chose ClanBase because the community that came with it was much stronger than any other leagues going, people just seemed to know each other. I’d sooner play with a community of competitive players who are out there to have fun than people who’re in it to simply say “We’re top of this ladder *flex epeen*”.

What was the inspiration for your blog ‘Pirates cant Justify Piracy’?
The inspiration for ‘Pirates can’t justify piracy’ was after seeing quite a number of people that seem to think that pirating software is fine which to be fair, isn’t. I know there are people out there who will stand by and defend piracy as if it was their own life, but my aim was just to try and open peoples eyes up a little. I was once thinking about what it would be like to be a game developer or even just a lone software developer. You make a product that you know will be helpful or entertain other people, and for your hard work, you would expect to make a little money from it. It’s sad really, because it really is stealing. But because being a pirate has never really been taken seriously by the law, and it’s so easy, people do it all the time. If there was a consequence for pirating and it was 100% trackable, I’d be willing to bet that it would stop.

However, saying that, the PC platform is changing. Whether that’s because of piracy or just an experiment. The method of going to a shop, buying a game, and inputting a CD Key will be over, or at least only for small games. I predict that Quake Live or Battlefield Heroes will be the first to show best way to beat piracy which is to release games for free and support them with advertisements or micro transactions. I believe the PC platform is just going through a rough patch at the minute and people are looking for the best way to beat piracy. I know this is kind of beating a dead horse. But looking at Crysis’ piracy figures of 20:1, imagine if Crysis was released for free and each of those 20 million people who reportedly downloaded it had to watch a 15-30 second advert before playing a game or possible even a level. I’d be willing to bet EA/Crytek would’ve made a hell of a lot more money. Retail is dying for PC and whether that’s because of piracy or a lack of interest, we do need change.

Pirates can’t justify Piracy was just a way of me asking a way of how people think that stealing a product from someone is ok and what are peoples excuses. I was curious. The best excuse I’ve seen was that the plastic from CD’s was bad for the environment. But hey, digital distribution is now taking off with service’s like Steam and Gametap if the environment really means that much to you. I’ll still be paying for my entertainment and if you think that’s dumb then fine, but I believe in supporting people for their hard work.

Any last words or shoutouts?
