Valve Prepared to Discuss Acquisition
Gamasutra have posted a thoughtful Q&A with Doug Lombardi in which he talks about Valve’s acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios (now Valve South) and their creative relationship with Mike Booth and his team. Naturally Lombardi gives a glowing report of the merger:
Gamasutra:What’s it like having Turtle Rock now officially part of Valve, versus what it was like before?
Lombardi: You know, the acquisition really felt only like it’s a piece of paper that makes things official. When we met Mike in 2002, here at the show, we knew right away that we wanted to work with him; we tried to hire him.Zoom out (and fast forward) a bit from Valve’s acquisition of Turtle Rock, and you have Lombardi expressing willingness to discuss the acquisition of Valve. In a separate article on Gamasutra, he gives his thoughts on Valve’s past publishers, from Sierra to Vivendi, and their current deal with EA on Left 4 Dead.
Gamasutra: If anyone is interested in acquiring Valve, VP Doug Lombardi is “happy to have that conversation,” he told Gamasutra in a recent interview.
“By the same token, the company’s doing pretty well, and we’re really happy with what we’re doing,” he added.
“So we’ll see. I mean, anything is possible.”No doubt the community’s reaction to this news will be carefully considered and entirely reasonable.
