More Bang for Your Buck

One of my favorite sites to visit is computerandvideogames.com, and I never miss any of their PC-based articles. One of their latest articles, More Bang for Your Buck, takes an interesting look into the controversy that many people feel when it comes to underpowered weapon sounds in games. It’s surprisingly more complex than you’d think.
Without a little techno dabbling, gun effects quickly grow tiresome. Teams behind games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare might start with an ultra-realistic AK-47, then dial it down so it doesn’t sound like the devil gnashing on your innards.

Like the effects of bullets, the sound of gunfire has to be fictionalised to a degree - the challenge is to do so without making it sound ridiculous. The mod talks with sound developers from the infamous Charles Maynes (CoD 3, MoH: Airborne, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, etc.) to sound developer Luke Hatton from the likes of Insurgency and Fistful of Frags and looks at the reasoning and development behind video game gun sounds. So if you’re a gun nut upset over the weak sounding AK-47 in Counter-Strike or the action movie junkie who wants to go deaf from a video game, then click here to check out the full article.
