Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the most successful games of all time, with over 6 million copies sold in the first week. The Dutch Crown Magazine wondered what all these people who the play the game think about violence; so they held a survey.

For their first edition, the people at Crown Magazine surveyed 700 GTA IV players and asked them several questions about themselves and the game.

First of all, 99,3% of the questioned people were male with an average age of 17.5 years. This last figure is rather surprising as the game is rated 18+ and the Grand Theft Auto series is marked as ‘too violent’ and ‘disturbing’ very often.

When the people were asked why they play the game, 94.5% said it was because of the freedom in the game, and that they could do what they wanted. ‘Great atmosphere’ was the answer of 75.4% of the people. Only 17.5% played the game because of all the action and the shooting. Another important question if the gamers thought it was fair to rate the game 18+, and 61.3% of them answered a ‘yes’.

Parents were also questioned, and with a very controversial question; “Do you think that GTA IV is to violent?” 11.2% of them believed it is, though the majority (67.5%) thought the violence in the game is acceptable.
