Is Valve Taking Over the Industry?

I’m sure many of you reading this can look back and remember the introduction of Steam. We were used to the stable WON Network, manually updating our Half-Life clients, and we were happy with it all. Steam came pre-loaded with loads of bugs, ineffective and unreliable content servers, and caused only headaches for us all. Who would have thought then that Steam would grow to over 15 million active accounts and a library of more than 250 games from not only Valve, but also from some of the top developers in the industry?

Craig Pearson of PC Gamer in conjunction with CVG.com takes an in-depth look into just how this simple program went from alienating thousands of Counter-Strike players to revolutionizing the gaming industry with the community-rich features, strong anti-piracy attributes, and the recent introduction of Steamworks.
Valve have already presented Steamworks to publishers. Jason Holtman, director of business development for Valve, has gauged their reactions. “When they see it they say ‘this solves a whole bunch of tech and customer problems I have. And also solves this business problem I have’.

They run around trying to put these things together and it happens towards the end of their development and they’re now like ‘wow, the things I get in CS, Half-Life 2 and Orange Box are all just there and working.’”Be sure to check out the article and see just what Steam has been through, is going through now, and will see down the road.
