Video games are a ‘man thing’
Ever wondered why most people who play games are male? Ever asked why there seems to be comparatively fewer females playing games? New research claims to have discovered the answers to these questions.

A study by Stanford University Professor Allan Reiss published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research states that men are more ‘obsessed’ with the desire to conquer and win than women.
Brain activity was monitored as men and women were wired up to an MRI scanner while they competed in a basic video game. They tried to gain onscreen territory by clicking on a series of balls. Both men and women understood the game and knew how to win, but the men were more driven. Reiss said:
The males were just a lot more motivated to succeed.
The ‘reward circuit’ made up of the nucleus accumbens, amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in the brain were influenced more in men and the ‘better connected’ this circuit is, the better the performance. Reiss explained:
These gender differences might help explain why males are more attracted to, and more likely to become “hooked” on, video games than females.
The research suggests that males are more likely to feel ‘rewarded’ with a sense of achievement when playing games. Reiss added:
I think it’s fair to say that males tend to be more intrinsically territorial. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who historically are the conquerors and tyrants of our species.
The research didn’t extend to who was better at playing video games, but given the evidence produced the assumption would be males are probably better as the urge to succeed is greater than in females.
